I have a triangle wave and want to convert it into a square wave.
An example can be seen in the figure below, where the black line is the input signal, and the orange is the output signal.
I can only think of generating a square wave using a root-finder, but I don’t know how to calculate the phase for this.

You could apply a single-zero low-pass filter to the triangle wave, where the zero is located at the instant where the triangle wave is at zero amplitude. This will give you something like the orange square wave example in your figure.
